The History of Counselling
What is Counselling?
We all go through challenges in our lives. It is how you deal with situations that matters. Sometimes you need to stand back, and talk it out in order for you to see your solution. This gives you a chance to see who you are and how you would like to handle the situation rather than just falling into patterns of reaction. Once you regain your ability to choose your reaction you regain power over your life. Instead of feeling as though life is treating you as a victim and you are helpless, you can now create your life.
When should I see a Counsellor?
Right now in your life you, or someone close to you, may need to talk with someone.
You may be:
in a relationship that just isn't meeting your needs
coping with changes in your work environment
struggling to cope with stress
trying to overcome fear and a lack of self-esteem
experiencing life threatening illness or trauma
trying to cope with grief or loss
In any of the situations above counselling may be helpful.
What happens in a Counselling Session?
The Counsellor will take a history from you to determine your current problem and the context of how it fits in your life. Your counsellor understands that you may be feeling emotional and that in most cases you will probably find your problem(s) a little difficult to talk about. Counselling is about having a conversation about your life which in time will reveal how you are thinking and feeling, and what you can learn about your existing strengths and also what strengths you need to develop in order to move forward.
Working with a counsellor allows you to gain insights into the unconscious patterns holding you back. For instance, have you ever discovered patterns in your life that recur over and over again? They may have a different face, a different name, however it's a similar situation playing itself out. It's like a movie playing over and over again!
It is those things that you are here to discover.
Does it hurt?
As you open up there will probably be times when you will feel emotional pain. You may also feel unsettled and emotionally 'raw' leading up to, or after a big shift in awareness. This is a good sign but make sure you tell your counsellor what is going on. In time everything will settle down and you will benefit from your new way of thinking.
Can I get rebates from my health insurance?
Some Health Insurers cover Counselling. It is best to check with them as to whether you are covered or not and your particular level of cover.

Ring up and book a time to talk, to unburden yourself with someone who just wants to listen and help you find your particular solution.
